View Full Version : New idea- who has taken apart the NC2 tail lights?

So my old idea was getting those carbon Miata taillights. Pass. Massive expense. Im quite handy, and plan a full custom LED ring and outfit for the tail lights, but before I go down that hole, can anyone tell me if they have cut the lense off the nc2 tail lights. Not nc1, we all know those have been well documented here. The nc2 tails are coming up short in the search.
I plan on: painting the chrome accent ring. Putting LEDs in the ring area (dont know what to call that. Ill have to (painfully) upload a pic with what Im talking about here so you folks can see.

I think a light tube type setup that is similar to F150 tail lights would be cool... but, just upgrade w/VLEDs and be done with it... anything else will probably be a huge hassle... unless it works in which case show us how lol

Thanks. Yeah Richard has done it, but on nc1 tails. I was looking for someone that has been inside the nc2/3. Since they are a tad different.

One thing I did when I was looking to merge the internals of the G35 tailights with the exterior of the NB was to reach out to a Miata salvager to see if they would be willing to send me a broken Maita tail light. That way I could see if there was a way to mount the G35 internals to the Miata base without it looking too hacked up.
I did end up with a free broken Miata tailight and a G35 tail that I bought, but then I lost interest in the project because SUPERCHARGER!

Taillights are a mod that many shy away from, because it involves cutting them open, and resealing them afterwards. If you dont get a lot of responses, thats probably why. Some have applied either a spray tint or a film tint, upgraded to LED bulbs, and called it a day.

Several long threads on taillights in the Mods-Non Performance section. I hate to say "do a search" but I can't dig them up at this time. Not hard to find if you use Google to search (Miata.net/NC/Taillights/modification/ . . something like that) and not the forum search software. If it helps, here is my NC1 tail light mod. I just used Night Shades red and honestly, I think it looks really good. Yes, I know, my reverse light is red but I only reverse out of my driveway and my parking spot at work.

El Fez, I have read EVERY thread here. They are all for the nc1. No nc2. Except the one where Carbon Miata thought about and never came through.
I’m doing the nc2 lights. Wayyyyyy wayyyy different. Same process, but internally, it’s different.
