One of my favorite interviews of Kobe Bryant was done by Candace Parker and Kristen Ledlow on the "Ledlow & Parker" podcast back in 2019.Kobe talked about the NBA’s rapid growth in the 1980’s and the impact of players’ and teams’ character and story development. Nicknames like Magic, Air Jordan, Ice Man, and Chocolate Thunder… Rivalries between Los Angeles “Showtime” Lakers vs Boston Celtics; Chicago Bulls vs Detroit “Bad Boys” Pistons…These were products of both natural and intentional story development that gave fans a story to follow outside of the gameplay. Stories resonate… Athletes, teams, and leagues alike all benefit from telling them. And the same is true to this day.Once again, we’re seeing it unfold before us through the explosion of NCAA Women’s Basketball this year. If you haven’t heard (where have you been?), the Women’s NCAA Championship game smashed viewership records, averaging 18.7 million viewers and drawing greater viewership than the men’s championship game for the first time in history. And this didn’t happen by accident. In addition to the phenomenal product on the court, Women’s March Madness was chock-full of storylines:Nicknames like Bayou Barbie, Paige Buckets, Ponytail Pete (aka the GOAT)... Rivalries like the one that emerged in the Elite Eight rematch of last year’s national championship between Louisiana State University and University of Iowa… Breakthrough talent from newcomers like Juju Watkins, Tessa Johnson, Hannah Hidalgo… Dynasties like the one Dawn Staley and undefeated National Champions University of South Carolina are building… the list goes on.Whether it was back in the 1980s or just last month, sports stories resonate. And that’s why it’s so important that we continue to tell them. I’m excited to see the next chapter of some of these stories in tonight’s WNBA (Women's National Basketball Association) draft. Join me & tune in to ESPN at 7:30 pm ET to watch! 🎥For more details on how/why this WNBA draft could change EVERYTHING, check out this Axios article by Justin L. Mack and Analis Bailey.

“Atomic Habits” by James Clear just gave me an important reminder. It’s not the act of goal setting that differentiates those who reach them from those who don’t… It’s the systems. For the most part, if you play a sport competitively, then your goal is to play it at the highest level. Or at least the highest level of which you’re capable.Similarly, If you are building a business, you want to build the most successful business in your space. If you are an artist, you want your art to impact as many eyes and ears as possible. For those taking it seriously, the overarching goal often seems relatively universal. But while lots of people share the same goal, few experience the same outcomes. Many of the differences in outcome lie in the systems created, the habits formed, and the processes followed by the individual or set of individuals pursuing the goal. Over a long period of time, these efforts, or lack thereof, create the disparities in the outcomes that we all acknowledge, both good and bad. Simply setting a goal isn’t enough: The goal is your compass. The system you implement to get there are the legs.Let’s get to walkin’.

Life doesn’t always give us a stage but when it does… grab the damn mic 😂I spent Super Bowl week in Brazil and was fired up with their passion of the National Football League (NFL). The positive energy of the Brazilian people is a virus... and it didn’t take long for me to catch it. After a week in Sao Paulo, our final event was the Super Bowl watch party held in an auditorium filled with hundreds of die-hard Brazilian NFL fans. I saw a stage. I saw a moment. And after the 3rd quarter, I grabbed the mic to do my best Freddie Mercury rendition. My time in Brazil – and the energy of its people– reminded me that our life’s experience is to be treasured and memories are to be made at every opportunity.Happy Monday! Let’s seize our moments this week!

I am inspired by this piece of artwork by Raelis Vasquez.Upon my first interaction with the world of fine art, I was directed to an emerging Jersey-based, Dominican artist named Raelis Vasquez (@raelis on IG). Scrolling through his profile, I was enthralled by the vibrancy of his work and made an effort to reach out. We scheduled a studio visit at his home studio in Northeast New Jersey, about 45 min outside of Manhattan. We spent time going through his work, his process and the reasons behind his evolution in style. Part of our conversation was spent discussing some of the classical masters who have inspired his work over the years. He talked excitedly about an artist named Ilya Repin (as a rookie in the art game, this was the first I had heard of Mr. Repin) and how he had spent many hours studying the techniques and ways of the classical master. He then pointed to a work that he did as an ode to Repin. The work mirrors a historical piece of Repin’s, except it was in Raelis’s unique style. Furthermore, Raelis himself is painted as the subject, rather than the figure that was in the original Repin. It is a self-portrait. I am inspired by this piece because it serves as a reminder that we can become whoever and whatever we want to become. If we study and strive, we can reach any and every echelon we can possibly desire. And we can do it in our own individualistic, unique style. Why do it any other way?

Really cool partnership shared with me by Stephen Green. Love the concept of teaching STEAM to youth through one of the keystones of culture: the sneaker. Well-done, Christopher Emdin.I'm inspired! Now back to the lab... 👨🏽💻 The Big Yard Foundation 🌳

When thinking about creative brand development (especially within sports), I like to use the metaphor of the five senses. As humans, we typically process whether or not we like a thing through leveraging one, two, or in some cases, all five of our senses. How does the thing look? Does it have a delightful texture? Is it tasty? Is it pleasing to hear? Does it have a sweet fragrance?Similarly to the five senses, a brand has several mediums to evoke emotional responses in humans. How do you communicate through written mediums? Captions, threads, messages, responses. How about visually? Photo, carousel, video, reels.Sonically, perhaps?Podcast, VoiceOver, music. These mediums span across and be interwoven throughout different channels - website, social media platforms, email, etc.Ideally, the voice is consistent but tailored specifically for the channel. Content should be curated specifically for the humans’ expectation of the channel/platform on which the content is being consumed.Creating a brand is an art. And also a science. Find your voice. Find your mediums. Communicate consistently.*Check out my full thoughts on brand development at link in comments below.*

I am inspired by the biography of Steve Jobs by Walter Isaacson. There are so many great quotes and anecdotes that absolutely got me going during this 591 page read. It took me seven months to get through it but I would highly, highly recommend.I'm a sucker for a good quote; here are a few from the book below that stood out to me:“If you act like you can do something, then it will work.”“People who know what they’re talking about don’t need PowerPoint.”“The best way to predict the future is to invent it.”“Form follows emotion”“You should never start a company with the goal of getting rich. Your goal should be making something you believe in and making a company that will last.”“If you just sit and observe, you will see how restless your mind is. If you try to calm it, it only makes it worse, but over time it does calm, and when it does, there's room to hear more subtle things - that's when your intuition starts to blossom and you start to see things more clearly and be in the present more. Your mind just slows down, and you see a tremendous expanse in the moment. You see so much more than you could see before. It's a discipline; you have to practice it.”“Remembering that you are going to die is the best way I know to avoid the trap of thinking you have something to lose. You are already naked. There is no reason not to follow your heart.”“Some people say, "Give the customers what they want." But that's not my approach. Out job is to figure out what they're going to want before they do. I think Henry Ford once said, "If I'd asked customers what they wanted, they would have told me, 'A faster horse!'" People don't know what they want until you show it to them.”
