If you were to ask my nephew, Lincoln, what one of his Aunt Brooke’s favorite recipes is, he would say Crab Rangoons. Everyone loves how tasty this healthy appetizer is and no one will know that it is a healthier version. Who knew something could taste so good and be healthy?

What to Serve with Healthy Baked Rangoon

This is one of my favorite healthy appetizers. There are so many great ways to serve it.If you are making these as an appetizer, you might want to have some of these other healthy appetizers.

Variations to this Recipe:

While a classic crab rangoon is the ingredients and flavors in this recipe, there are ways to change the recipe.

  • Add Chicken: While a chicken rangoon feature crab, you could add shredded chicken as a different meat choice. It will change the flavor and texture. If adding chicken make sure to shred it very tiny.
  • Imitation Crab Meat: To make these the healthiest you can use true white lump crab meat. However, you can use imitation crab meat, which is usually made from tin fish, because the flavors are close.

What is crab rangoon?

Crab rangoon is a combination of cream cheese, crab meat, onions and spices wrapped in a wonton wrapper. Often times crab rangoon is deep fried. Our version is baked in the oven to keep it a healthier version of crab rangoon! They can be served hot or cold with various dipping sauces.

What other names are there for Crab Rangoon?

Some people have had rangoon but don’t know that this is what they are called. Other names that you might have heard of:

  • Crab puffs
  • crab rangoon puffs
  • crab pillows
  • crab cheese wontons
  • cheese wontons.

What you will need to make Healthy Baked Crab Rangoon?

  • white lump crab meat
  • egg
  • fat-free cream cheese
  • non-fat Greek yogurt
  • garlic powder
  • green onions
  • wonton wrappers (4-inch size)
  • less-sodium soy sauce
  • sweet chili sauce
  • yellow mustard
  • sriracha hot sauce

How to Make:

Preheat the oven to 375°F and line 2 baking sheets with parchment paper or a silicone baking mat.

Crack the egg in a small bowl and add 2 tablespoons of water. Whisk together to make an egg wash.

In a large mixing bowl, break up the crab meat with a fork, then add the cream cheese, yogurt, soy sauce, garlic powder and onions. Mix together until incorporated.

Lay the wonton wrappers out on the baking sheets and egg wash the edges. Spoon ½ tablespoon of the mixture into each wonton wrapper.

To seal the wrapper, fold each wonton in half diagonally to make a triangle and gently press the edges together to adhere to each other with the egg wash.

Bake until the wonton edges are golden and the filling is heated through, 10-12 minutes.

To make the sauce: Mix all ingredients together in a small mixing bowl. The sauce can be served at room temperature or heated.

To heat, warm the sauce in a small nonstick saucepan on low heat for 5 minutes until warm. Serve each serving of crab rangoon with a scant tablespoon of the dipping sauce.

Ingredients

For the Baked Crab Rangoons:

  • 1 egg
  • 8 ounces white lump crab meat
  • 4 ounces cream cheese
  • 2 tablespoons plain Greek yogurt
  • 2 teaspoons less-sodium soy sauce

  • 2 green onions thinly sliced
  • 38 4-inch wonton wrappers

For the Sweet and Spicy Mustard Dipping Sauce:

  • ½ cup sweet chili sauce
  • 2 tablespoons yellow mustard
  • 1 tablespoon less-sodium soy sauce
  • 1 teaspoon sriracha hot sauce
